Car Emblems, the Process
The Process starts with an email…
Send us all the details on your project, the more the better.
If you can send the design for the emblem that’s great.
A photo of your car, where the emblem will go helps, too!
Include your phone number, many times we’ll have questions.
You’ll get a free proposal, outlining your best MotorHead Emblem.
The First step in making your emblem is to create it in 3Dimensions.
For Custom Emblems, using dimensions similar to factory emblems maintains a look of “belonging” on the vehicle.
For Restoration Emblems, we match the original specs, point for point.
You’ll get renderings of the emblem from different angles, for your approval.
Next comes the tooling and mold work.
The “Master” will be created taking the best advantage of computers and handcarving.
The kind of mold used, all depends on your emblem project- the design and dimensions, the quantity, the materials, and how your emblem is being used.
Once this step is complete, we’ll create your actual emblem.
Emblems are usually Cast, and usually made of Metal,
but sometimes we use other methods and materials – depending on the specific emblem.
Typically they are investment cast.
There is a wax replica made of your emblem, it is encased in investment- a plaster-of-paris type material, creating a mold.
Then its put in a kiln to burn out the wax, and end up with a cavity, or negative space that looks like your emblem.
After a 13 hour stage burnout, we pour molten metal into the cavity.
This creates your metal emblem!
Next comes the finish work-
The hand finishing is what “makes” an Emblem.
Most folks want high polish triple chrome plate finish,
but others such as black chrome, and not so shiny finishes are gaining popularity.
Ask us about your special finish needs.
At this point the emblem is almost finished.
The last step- adding color to the emblem (not all have color)…
These days- the lead in the enamel used is outlawed, and there are better alternatives.
We use a great high gloss resin, and you will never tell the difference.
After a stop for final inspection, your emblem is ready to ship!
